Bogor - The President of the Republic of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, and the Prime Minister of Japan, Ishiba Shigeru, agreed to strengthen the two countries' comprehensive strategic partnership in various fields. The agreement was reached during a bilateral meeting at the Bogor Presidential Palace, West Java, on Saturday (11/1/2025).
In his press statement reported by BPMI Setpres, President Prabowo said that PM Ishiba's visit reflects the commitment of the two countries to strengthen bilateral relations that have been closely established for decades.
“This visit reflects the strong commitment of both parties to strengthen relations between the two countries and strengthen the Indonesia-Japan comprehensive strategic partnership and also our commitment to continue to seek areas of more intensive cooperation,” President Prabowo said.
One of the main focuses of the meeting was increasing cooperation in the economic and energy sectors. PM Ishiba expressed his readiness to support Indonesia in ensuring a stable energy supply, including through the development of renewable energy projects such as geothermal power plants (PLTP), hydrogen, and ammonia.
“We want to encourage cooperation in resources and infrastructure to maintain energy security and decarbonsation through various channels,” PM Ishiba said.
In addition, Japan will also support industrialization programs in Indonesia, especially in the field of downstream natural resources. President Prabowo invited Japan to participate in the program that aims to increase the added value of Indonesian products before they are exported.
“We invite Japan to participate in the program that we have launched towards the industrialization of Indonesia, especially in the field of downstream,” President Prabowo said.
In the defense sector, the two countries agreed to establish a discussion forum at the practitioner level to strengthen maritime security cooperation. PM Ishiba agreed to provide high-speed patrol boats to Indonesia as a form of support for securing Indonesian waters.
“We have reached an agreement to provide high-speed patrol boats through the first Official Security Assistance (OSA) with Indonesia, and held a 2 plus 2 as a meeting of the Foreign Minister and Defense Minister,” PM Ishiba said.
In addition to bilateral cooperation, the two leaders also emphasized the importance of maintaining the stability of the Indo-Pacific region amid global geopolitical dynamics. “Indonesia has a desire to maintain good relations with all countries in the world, all economic blocs, where we want to maintain a close relationship so that it can contribute to an atmosphere that can reduce tensions between major countries,” President Prabowo said.
