Pertamina Patra Niaga Partners with Sojitz Indonesia, Supporting Clean Energy Transition with Renewable Diesel HVO

Jakarta - Pertamina Patra Niaga and PT Sojitz Indonesia established a strategic partnership to support energy transition and carbon emission reduction through the use of Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) or Pertamina Renewable Diesel products. This partnership is part of Pertamina Patra Niaga's commitment to become an energy solution provider and a key partner in decarbonising the industrial sector.

This cooperation was outlined through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between PT Pertamina Patra Niaga's Central and Commercial Marketing Director, Maya Kusmaya, and PT Sojitz Indonesia's CEO, Seiji Itagaki, in Bali on Tuesday (10/9/2024).

"Pertamina Patra Niaga is not only focused on providing products, but also on the impact of every energy solution we offer. This collaboration is clear evidence of our efforts to ensure a cleaner and more sustainable energy future, both for industry and society at large," said Maya Kusmaya, quoted from Pertamina's press release on Wednesday (11/9/2024).

HVO, which is produced at the Green Refinery Cilacap, has received international recognition through the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) certification. The first distribution of HVO to PT Sojitz has been carried out for testing on diesel generator engines owned by PT MHI Engine System.

"HVO has the potential to reduce carbon emissions by 85 per cent and greenhouse gas emissions by 90 per cent, making it an environmentally friendly energy solution that supports the Net Zero Emission 2060 target. HVO can also be directly used on diesel engines without modification, expanding the positive impact on the environment and supporting the clean energy transition, especially in the industrial sector," Maya Kusmaya added.

In addition to HVO, Pertamina Patra Niaga and PT Sojitz Indonesia are also exploring the potential for developing other renewable energy, including the utilisation of UCO (Used Cooking Oil) and POME (Palm Oil Mill Effluent) and carbon credits.

Seiji Itagaki, CEO of PT Sojitz Indonesia, called this collaboration an important step in supporting sustainable business and providing environmentally friendly energy solutions. "Sojitz Indonesia is committed to contributing to the reduction of carbon emissions through cooperation with Pertamina Patra Niaga," Itagaki said.

Rudi Kurniawan, National Capacity and Quality Assurance Coordinator of SKK Migas, also expressed his appreciation for this cooperation. He also said that the HVO trial was successfully conducted at one of Pertamina EP Field Cepu's Cooperation Contractors (KKKS), and is expected to be implemented more widely in the upstream oil and gas sector.
